Chapter Eighteen
Dex
“What are you doing?” I asked Rose.
I was running along, trying to creep up to the back gate of Eric’s house. I could sense where his pack was, and that they did not know I was anywhere near them. They were all too busy with other things, mostly boredom and the tediousness of being under Eric’s control. That had to be a nightmare to deal with.
Suddenly, I heard something behind me. I jerked around with the gun and almost whacked Rose in the face with it. I quickly lowered the gun before I ended up shooting her in the face with a silver bullet. I couldn’t believe she was here. “What are you doing here?” I asked again.
“I didn’t want to stay in the car,” she said. “Besides, I can’t have you doing all this to save my life. I have to do my part. This is my problem.”
“I appreciate that you want to help me,” I said. “But this is dangerous, and you are going to get yourself killed.”
“If it happens, then it happens,” she said. “I’m not sure I want to live as a wolf anyway. There is no guarantee that I won’t become some sort of a monster.”
I sighed. “We can talk about that later. I assure you that you will be ok, if you follow what I tell you, but you already are not doing that. Now, get back to the car!”
“No. I’m going to be here,” she said. “I’m going in there with you. End of story.”
I shook my head. She was so damn stubborn. What in the hell?
“Fine,” I said. “Take off the safety of the gun and don’t point it at anything you don’t intend to kill. Please, don’t shoot me.”
“Oh, please. Give me some credit.”
We were getting close to the property now. I urged Rose to slink down low to the ground with me. I crouched down and ran to the wall. We spread ourselves against the wall and looked around to make sure that no one was watching us. I turned on the eyesight and the hearing that came with being a wolf so that I could check to see if there were any cameras around. I only saw a couple, but they were moving back and forth the whole time. I knew that we could maneuver past it. We could move too fast for the camera to pick it up. Or at least I could. I wasn’t sure how much she could really tap into the wolf and access those powers. I knew she could do it, but she didn’t know how.
“Ok,” I said. “We are going to jump over the wall quickly. You need to think of the wolf inside of you, lean into it, and imagine yourself jumping hard over the wall and landing safely on the other side. Visualize and repeat.”
“Ok,” she said.
“Watch me.”
I quickly jumped over the wall and landed on the ground softly. Then I stepped back away from it and waited for her to give it a try.
